Having New Experiences & How it Affects Your Perception of Time

Hey guys,

Today I want to talk about having new life experiences and how that affects our perception of time.  We've all experienced how summer as a child felt so much longer compared to summer as an adult.  The reason is because as a child we are experiencing a lot of new things for the first time.  When we are experiencing new things, our perception of time seems longer.

Compare this to the adult who is in the same routine each and every day.  They have a nine to five job, come home and eat dinner, watch TV, take a shower, and go to sleep.  Day after day, rinse, wash repeat.  When someone is in the same routine, their perception of time starts to go by very fast.  It's almost as if they are unconscious.  There is no aliveness in their eyes.  They are on autopilot and going through the motions of life.

Once every week, I will have a new experience.  Some things in the past include cliff diving, going to an art museum, being in the audience of a TV show, volunteering/community service, and the list goes on.  I will use things like Groupon, LivingSocial, Meetup, and Eventbrite to find new things.  It is good to be open to new activities and experience as much of life as you can.

We don't do this is because we are like plants (Credit: RSD Tyler).  When a plant has its nutrients, soil, water, and sunlight, it is comfortable where it is and does not want to venture out into the unknown and risk being killed.  We are the same way.  Our brain wants security and survival.  The unknown is scary, however those who dare venture out find it to be very rewarding and feel a sense of aliveness.

Get out there and do something awesome!
